Rights Restriction 101

In this eLearning, Branden DeFoort unpacks the meaning of a rights restriction and highlights common limitations that people experience when exercising their rights. As service providers, we typically have the best intentions to support people to exercise their rights and to live self-directed lives. However, the impact of our support does not always align with our intent. At times, people we support experience rights restrictions. Some rights restrictions are imposed by systemic barriers and others as a result of the ways in which we support people, in particular when it comes to keeping people safe.

Empowering People To Be in Charge of Their Story

Branden DeFoort explores the topic of controlling your own narrative. At the core of all our work, regardless of our role in the agency, our aim is to support people to live self-directed lives. A function of this goal is to support people to be in charge of their own stories. This boils down to choices and how people should be in choice about what, when, and how information is shared or not shared about them.

Branden candidly draws parallels between his lived experience and others with disabilities which unveils just how different people are treated. In conclusion, Branden provides a practical tool known as the "Sealed Envelope" to support this work.
