Understanding the importance of natural supports in career development is essential for fostering successful employment outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities. Natural supports include family members, friends, mentors, and community members who provide encouragement, guidance, and assistance. These relationships are often long-term and deeply rooted in trust and mutual respect, making them invaluable in the career development process.
Family members and natural supporters are uniquely positioned to understand the strengths, interests, and aspirations of people with intellectual disabilities. Their close relationships enable personalized support, helping to build confidence and motivation. For example, a family member might recognize a person's interest in a particular field and seek out related volunteer opportunities or internships to help them gain relevant experience.
Leveraging a person's social capital is a critical aspect of this support. Most people land their first job because someone referred them and the same principle applies here. It's often about who you know, not just what you know. For instance, a young man named Alex with a passion for gardening might struggle to find employment on his own.
